Training
If the paddocks are too large, we have a portable round pen for those horses that are only allowed to stand. There is approximately 30 acres in pasture with sheds for protection from the elements. Each shed has hayracks. Located next to the newest training barn is an airy covered 60' x 80' arena. WELL MANNERED COMPETITIVE RACERS Best known for "completely broken" and well-mannered horses At Last Farm loves breaking, training, and caring for thoroughbred horses. We can break your horse beginning with lounging, driving, mounting, use of round pen and general hacking. An airy covered arena allows training to continue during inclement weather. We use training methods that include hill work, general legging-up, cross country, flat track and gate work on our own facilities. All these training procedures keep a horse fresh and make them bold. Weanlings: Weanlings are kept separate from the older trainees. The weanlings are pasture boarded and fed in separate feeding bins. They are worked daily to maintain good manners and appropriate behavior for leading, grooming and farrier work. We have found that daily work with the weanlings makes the transition to yearling breaking much easier. Controlling any behavior problems from the beginning allows more attention and concentration on training, for the trainer and horse. Therefore the horse is constantly getting positive feedback.
Yearlings usually start their training program in late May early June of their one year old year. We use different methods for completing their training. Lounging with and without tack, driving, belly mounting and then actual mounting under tack. Once the yearling is broken and is hacking it will be paired with a pony or retired racehorse to begin its fieldwork. Eventually two yearlings will be paired and taught to become leaders and competitive aggressive racehorses. MATURE HORSES Just for lack of a better title a mature horse is anything from two year olds and upward. If you have a horse that is not quite ready for the track we will gladly school it and make it ready for the racetrack. We have also worked with horses that have been partially broken. We will train these horses as we do a yearling but at a faster pace (not too fast) to get them ready for racing. They will get all the hill work, hacking and gate work needed to make them a winner. At Last Farm offers space for stall and paddock or just pasture rest. When it is time to return to the racetrack our staff can freshen and leg up the horse. Rest and then schooling helps make these horses bold, bright and alert for the track. RIDERS UP! We Get Results Horses trained on farm that went on to become champions.
